Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Mighty Mule keypad and intercom failures in San Antonio typically cost $145 to $320 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a worn keypad membrane, a water-damaged intercom board, or the entire unit. We keep the most common Mighty Mule keypad models and universal intercom replacements on our trucks, so most San Antonio repairs are done the same day. The usual story we hear: the keypad stopped accepting the code after a hard rain, or the intercom works one direction but not the other, or the gate opens fine from the remote but the keypad does nothing at all.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

This covers every Mighty Mule keypad and intercom in the current and recent lineup: the MM-KP1000 digital keypad, the FM145 and FM146 gate openers with integrated keypad control, and the Mighty Mule Wireless Intercom system. Older Mighty Mule openers from the mid-2000s often used the MM136 keypad, which is now discontinued but still repairable with aftermarket boards. The compatibility gotcha most San Antonio owners hit: Mighty Mule has changed the keypad connector style twice in the last decade. A keypad from 2018 will not plug into a 2023 control board without an adapter harness, and the factory wiring diagrams don’t mention it. We check the connector style and board revision before ordering anything, so you’re not paying for a part that can’t connect to your opener.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Mighty Mule OEM keypads run $80 to $140 for the part alone. Quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like North Shore Commercial Door and GTO-compatible universal keypads run $50 to $90 and often outlast the OEM membrane in San Antonio heat. We stock both and tell you the price difference before you decide.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Keypad & Intercom Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but won’t accept the code. Usually a worn membrane or a failing relay on the keypad’s output side. The buttons register internally, but the signal never reaches the control board.
  • Works after rain, then dies when it dries out. Classic micro-crack in the keypad housing. Moisture bridges the contacts when wet, then corrosion opens the circuit as it dries. We see this constantly in San Antonio’s wet-dry cycles.
  • Intercom audio is one-way only. A failed speaker driver chip or a broken wire at the gate post. The outdoor unit can hear you, but you can’t hear the visitor, or vice versa.
  • Gate opens randomly without anyone pressing the keypad. A stuck button on the keypad membrane or water intrusion triggering phantom inputs. The control board is fine; the keypad is sending false signals.
  • Keypad dead, no lights, no response. Dead short from water ingress, a severed wire at the hinge point, or a blown fuse on the opener control board. This is the most common total failure we see on San Antonio gates more than five years old.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, a Mighty Mule keypad swap runs $145 to $220 installed. Intercom replacement runs $210 to $320 installed. The range depends on whether we’re replacing just the outdoor unit, both indoor and outdoor stations, and whether your control board needs the adapter harness for the newer connector style. Every quote includes the part cost, labor, wire termination, and testing of the full open-close cycle. You get the written price before we touch a single screw, and that number doesn’t change at the door. If the repair fails within 365 days, Calder Gate Repair returns at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

A keypad or intercom swap is low voltage and generally safe to inspect yourself. You can check for obvious damage: cracked housing, corroded wire nuts, a loose connector at the control board. Where most San Antonio DIY attempts go wrong is the wiring itself. Mighty Mule uses color-coded wire, but if a previous owner spliced in low-voltage landscape wire or an irrigation cable, nothing matches the diagram anymore. We regularly unfix DIY jobs where the homeowner crossed the relay common and trigger wires, which can burn out the control board’s keypad input. A new keypad is $80 to $140; a new Mighty Mule control board because of a miswired keypad runs $200 to $350. If you’re not certain, call (361) 314-4803. Nico Alvarez will walk you through what he thinks it is before he ever shakes your hand.
