FAAC Gate Motor Replacement: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Most FAAC gate motor replacements in San Antonio run between $650 and $1,400 installed, depending on your model and whether we’re swapping the motor only or the full operator assembly. We keep common FAAC-compatible motors and control boards on our trucks, so a lot of these jobs happen same day or next morning. The typical call starts with a gate that suddenly won’t open, or one that groans and moves at half speed before stopping entirely. That’s almost always the motor or its capacitor giving up after years of San Antonio heat and dust.

If your FAAC opener is clicking but not turning, or tripping its breaker every time it cycles, you’re probably looking at a motor replacement. Not a relay. Not a sensor. The motor itself. Here’s what that means for your 410, 412, 740, 770, or S418 operator, what it costs, and how we handle it.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

We replace motors across the FAAC swing and slide operator lines most common in San Antonio residential gates: the 400 series (410, 412, 415), the 700 series (740, 750, 770), and the compact S418/S450 hydraulic and electromechanical units. Each has a different motor spec, and no, a 410 motor won’t bolt into a 770. The mounting flange, shaft diameter, and capacitor ratings are all different. That’s the first thing we check before quoting anything.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: FAAC changed motor specifications within the same series across production years. A 2008 FAAC 740 uses a different winding configuration than a 2016 unit, even though the housing looks identical from the outside. The only reliable way to match the motor is by reading the data plate on the operator itself, not the model number on the front cover. We always verify that plate before ordering or installing anything.

On the OEM vs. aftermarket question for FAAC specifically: genuine FAAC replacement motors carry a manufacturer warranty and we recommend them for anything still under an existing FAAC warranty window. For older out-of-warranty units, quality aftermarket motors with equivalent torque and RPM ratings often cost 30 – 40% less and hold up the same in San Antonio conditions, which we can talk through honestly when we see your operator. Calder Gate Repair is an independent service provider, not affiliated with FAAC, so our recommendation is based on what actually runs reliably in this climate, not a brand rep’s talking points.

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • Gate moves at half speed or hesitates, then runs normally. This is the classic San Antonio heat symptom. Motor windings degrade from repeated thermal cycling, and a motor that’s cooked down in Texas summers loses torque before it dies completely. It’s telling you it’s near the end.
  • Humming sound but no movement. That hum is the motor trying to start. If the capacitor is still good, the start winding has failed. You need a motor replacement, not just a new capacitor, though we test the capacitor first because it’s the cheaper fix when it’s actually the culprit.
  • Breaker trips every time the gate cycles. A motor drawing excessive current because of internal shorts will trip the circuit. This is a fire risk if ignored. Kill power to the operator and call us.
  • Burning smell from the operator housing. Insulation on the motor windings is breaking down. That smell is varnish and coil wire overheating. The motor is done.
  • Gate opens fine but the motor runs longer than it should. This can be a failing motor combined with a worn limit switch (the small sensor that tells the gate when to stop). The motor keeps running past its end point, working against the stop. We replace both when this pattern shows up.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest San Antonio pricing picture for FAAC gate motor replacement:

Job Type Typical Installed Price
Motor only, 400 series (410/412/415) $650 – $900
Motor only, 700 series (740/750/770) $800 – $1,100
Motor plus control board $1,000 – $1,400
Full operator assembly replacement (S418/S450) $1,200 – $1,800

The range depends on whether we’re doing a direct motor swap or dealing with collateral damage: water intrusion, a burned control board, or cabling that needs re-running. Every quote includes the part, labor, capacitor and limit switch check, and a full cycle test. You get the total price in writing, texted to you before we start. The number we agree on is the number on the invoice. Every replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the motor or our work fails within a year, we come back free and make it right.

You’ll also hear us mention brands we stock parts for beyond FAAC: LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls are all in the truck or one supplier run away. If your property has a mix of brands across multiple gates, we can handle all of it in one visit.

DIY or Call Us?

If you want to check the obvious stuff first, go ahead: confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped, look for a tripped GFCI outlet near the operator, and check for visible corrosion on the battery terminals if your FAAC has a backup battery. Those are safe to inspect and often explain a dead gate.

What you shouldn’t try to do is replace the motor yourself. FAAC motors connect to start and run capacitors that hold a charge even with power off, and the units operate on 120V or 240V line voltage. Get the wiring wrong and you can damage a new $400 motor, the control board, or yourself. Swing and slide gate operators also hold mechanical tension. A gate that releases mid-repair is dangerous to anything in its path. This is one of those jobs where the labor cost is a small price against a hospital visit or a burned-out board.

If you’ve got a FAAC motor that’s humming, moving slow, or dead and you want it handled today, call (361) 314-4803. We’ll give you a real answer and a written price before anything gets unbolted.
