If your Elite keypad stopped reading codes or your intercom buzzes but won’t open the gate, the fix usually means replacing the keypad module, the intercom board, or a shorted wire run. In San Antonio, expect to pay $185 to $420 for a typical Elite keypad replacement installed, and $140 to $310 for most intercom board swaps, depending on your model and whether we’re pulling new wire. We keep common Elite-compatible parts on the truck, so a lot of these jobs are done in a single visit.
What owners usually tell us: the gate worked yesterday, this morning the keypad lit up but the gate ignored every code. Or, the intercom rings inside the house, but the button to open the gate does nothing. Sometimes it’s a dead display entirely, which after a San Antonio thunderstorm is almost always a surge-related board failure.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
We see two Elite setups most often in San Antonio yards. First, the Elite SL series slide gate operators paired with Elite keypads wired directly to the board’s open terminals. Second, Elite Swing GATE arms with integrated intercom modules mounted on the keypad face. The model number lives on a label inside the keypad housing, usually starting with “EL” or “KP” followed by four digits. Snap a photo of that label before you call us. It saves a second trip and honestly, it saves you money on parts.
One compatibility gotcha with Elite specifically: older Elite keypads from the 2000s used a 10-core ribbon cable to the main board, while newer ones use a simple six-wire color-coded pigtail. They are not interchangeable without a retrofit adapter, and the adapter often costs as much as just buying the correct keypad. We routinely flag this before ordering anything. As an independent San Antonio gate repair company, not an Elite dealer, we stock both OEM Elite parts and quality aftermarket equivalents so you get a real choice: factory-original with its longer lead time, or an aftermarket keypad we can usually install same week. Both carry our written guarantee.

Signs Your Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Codes work sometimes, not others. The membrane or tactile switches under the number pad are worn. South Texas heat accelerates this; the rubber layer hardens and hairline cracks develop. Resetting codes won’t fix it. The pad needs replacing.
- Keypad lights up, gate does nothing. This points to a blown relay on the keypad circuit board or a break in the wire between the keypad and the operator. If it happened after a storm, it’s likely a surge-related board failure.
- Intercom rings, but the gate button is dead. The intercom audio circuit still works, but the dry-contact output to the opener has failed. On Elite units this is often corrosion inside the terminal block where the button wire connects.
- You hear a buzz or click but the gate won’t move. The keypad is sending a signal; the opener is receiving it. The fault is downstream, usually the limit switch or the opener’s motor capacitor, not the keypad itself.
- Display is blank or scrambled. This is almost always a fried display driver chip or water intrusion. In San Antonio’s spring storm season, we replace more Elite keypad displays in May and June than any other time of year.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Antonio, budget $185 to $420 installed for an Elite keypad replacement and $140 to $310 for an intercom board swap. The range comes down to three things: whether we can reuse your existing wiring, whether you want OEM or aftermarket parts, and how far the keypad is from the operator. Every quote includes the part, labor, wire checks, programming, and testing. We write the full price down and you approve it before anything is installed. If a repair fails within 365 days, we come back at no charge under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. That’s in writing on every job.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check: power to the keypad, whether the display lights up at all, and whether any visible wires look chewed or disconnected at the keypad housing. That’s it. Elite keypads and intercoms run on low voltage, so there’s no serious shock risk, but the moment you open the operator cabinet to trace wires, you’re looking at exposed AC terminals, capacitors that can still hold charge, and high-tension components for the gate arm itself. A wrong tap on a capacitor will ruin your whole week. Nico Alvarez says it plainly: “Elite boards are not a plug-and-play weekend project. The wiring diagrams for the SL series alone have four revisions.” If you’ve narrowed it down to a part we’ve covered here, call (361) 314-4803 and we’ll match the right part to your exact Elite model, install it, and program every code the same day.
FAQs
Expect 5 to 8 years for the keypad face and 6 to 10 for the intercom board, but San Antonio heat and spring lightning storms push those numbers down. If yours is past the 6-year mark and acting up, replacement usually makes more sense than repeated repairs. Call (361) 314-4803 and we’ll tell you honestly which side of the line your unit is on.
Sometimes. If the issue is a corroded terminal or a single bad solder joint on an older board, a repair can save you $100 or more. But keypad membranes and water-damaged displays aren’t repairable, period. We’ll tell you the truth either way before you spend a dollar.
Most Elite keypad replacements are done in 60 to 90 minutes once we’re on site. Intercom board swaps usually run 90 minutes to two hours, longer if we’re pulling new wire across a long San Antonio driveway.
We keep common keypads, intercom relay boards, and connectors on the truck, plus a range of aftermarket equivalents that match Elite wiring. If we don’t have your exact part on board, our supplier network in San Antonio usually gets it to us within one to three business days. We’ll tell you which timeline applies before you approve anything.
