Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in San Antonio typically runs $165 – $385 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the intercom board, or the entire housing. We stock Linear-compatible keypads and intercom parts on our trucks, so most jobs are done in one visit. Most San Antonio owners discover the failure the same way: the keypad stops lighting up, the intercom goes dead silent, or the gate only opens from the inside but not the keypad on the post. The good news is these parts fail in predictable ways, and the fix is usually faster and cheaper than replacing the whole opener.

If your keypad buttons are flaking, the intercom crackles when a guest buzzes in, or your code works “sometimes,” you’re looking at a repair we handle every week. We’ll help you figure out which Linear part you actually need, what it should cost, and whether a repair beats a full replacement. Written price before anything gets unbolted, always.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear made several keypad and intercom lines over the years, and they are not all interchangeable. The most common units we service in San Antonio are the AM-KP wireless keypad, the AK-11 and AK-21 hardwired keypads, and the AE-100 and AE-500 intercom/telephone entry systems. Older Linear access control panels like the RE-1 and RE-2 still show up on gates near Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills, and they use a different keypad pinout than the newer AM series.

The fastest way to identify your part is to look at the label inside the keypad housing or on the back of the intercom board. Linear stamps the model number there, usually starting with “AK,” “AM,” or “AE.” The compatibility gotcha to watch: an AM-KP keypad will not talk to an AE-100 intercom without a matching receiver board, and mixing aftermarket keypads from other brands into a Linear system often causes intermittent codes. We install OEM Linear parts where they’re still available and quality aftermarket equivalents when the OEM line has been discontinued. For the AM-KP, the aftermarket replacement we use matches the original frequency, but some cheap knockoffs on the market skip the weather sealing and fail within one San Antonio summer.

We’re an independent gate repair specialist, not affiliated with Linear. That means we’ll tell you honestly if a repair or a full replacement is the better spend.

Signs Your Linear Keypad Is Failing

  • Buttons need multiple presses to register. The membrane switch under the rubber face wears out after years of zero-effort pressing, and Texas heat accelerates the breakdown. If you’re pressing “1234” three times before the gate moves, the keypad is on borrowed time.
  • Code works at night but not during the day. This is a classic San Antonio symptom. Direct sun on a dark keypad housing expands the internal connections, and a cracked solder joint loses contact until the housing cools. We see this pattern on west-facing posts near the Pearl District and Olmos Park.
  • Intercom buzzes but voice is garbled or one-way. The intercom speaker cone dries out and tears in low humidity, or the microphone input on the board starts to fail. If you can hear the visitor but they can’t hear you, the mic circuitry is dying.
  • Gate opens randomly without a code. This is usually water intrusion in the keypad enclosure after heavy San Antonio rain, shorting the trigger wire. It’s also a security problem, not just an annoyance.
  • Keypad works with one code but not another. Linear keypads store codes in memory blocks, and individual blocks can corrupt while others keep working. A repair tech can clear and reprogram the memory, but if the corruption spreads, the board needs replacing.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a Linear-compatible keypad swap in San Antonio, you’re looking at $165 – $275 installed. A full intercom replacement runs $285 – $385, depending on whether we’re swapping just the board or the whole housing and speaker. Repairing an existing keypad (cleaning contacts, resealing the enclosure, reprogramming memory) lands around $115 – $185 when the board is still good.

Every price is written down before we start. That means parts, labor, and any programming time are all on the quote you approve at the door. No surprise line items. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we come back at no charge. If we install a new keypad or intercom and it fails in the same window, same deal.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do a few things before calling a San Antonio tech. Check that the keypad hasn’t simply lost power: verify the breaker isn’t tripped, and look for a tripped GFCI outlet near the gate. If you see obvious water inside the keypad housing or ants have taken up residence in the intercom (a surprisingly common Texas problem), that’s a repair job, not a reset job.

Where DIY goes wrong is inside the keypad and intercom boards. The keypad runs on low voltage, but the gate opener itself carries 12 to 24 volts AC, and some older Linear intercom panels are tied into a 110-volt supply in the main control box. If you’re not sure, opening the wrong enclosure is a shock risk. Also, Linear keypads are picky about programming sequences. One wrong step can lock the unit into a programming loop that is hard to clear without the original manual. We stock the parts, know the sequences, and we’ll text you a 20-minute heads-up before we arrive. Call (361) 314-4803 if you’d rather not chase wiring diagrams at 9 p.m.
